The place

A house, and a very big yard.

Sunset is not a room inside a bigger building. It is a house with its own playground: a bike lane, a climber, a playhouse, a sandbox, a dirt pit, gardens, and a lot of trees and grass.

Inside

Everything on one floor.

There is a cubby area by the front doors and one big classroom, which holds a book corner, dramatic play, art and drawing areas, and the general play and meals area. Two further rooms are used for circle time and naps. The kitchen is where lunch is cooked each day, and the children’s and staff washrooms are separate.

Outside

Children go out every day, rain or shine.

The outdoor playground has a bike lane, a climber, a playhouse, a sheltered sandbox, a dirt pit, gardens, and plenty of trees and grassy areas. We also make occasional use of the adjacent park.

Practical things

The questions families usually ask once they have seen the photographs.

  • CapacityLicensed group child care for up to 25 children at a time
  • AccessibilityThe building is wheelchair accessible, and everything is on one floor with no stairs between rooms
  • ParkingFree street parking around the daycare at drop-off and pick-up
  • KitchenA full kitchen on site, where lunch is cooked every day rather than delivered
  • WashroomsSeparate washrooms for the children and for staff
  • NearbyA park next door that the group walks to

Being in a house rather than a unit changes small things that add up. The kitchen is a real kitchen, so lunch is cooked in the building and the children can smell it. The yard is attached, so going outside is a door rather than an expedition. And twenty-five children in a house is quiet in a way that a large centre is not.
